Russia against French champagne producers: war is declared

Friday, July 2, 2021 will be a milestone for French champagne producers. Indeed, the Russian government and its President Vladimir Putin have enacted a law on the regulation of alcoholic beverages, which provides in particular that only Russian producers will now have the right to display the prestigious appellation "champagne" on their bottles.

Consequently, French champagne producers wishing to export their bottles to Russia will have to modify their labels (at their expense) and remove the mention "champagne" in favor of those of “bubble wine”, " sparkling wine " Or " sparkling wine ".

There is no doubt that Russia is part of a global trend of denying the protection of French Appellations for geopolitical purposes, as the United States and China did before it.
